About

Welcome to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Sustainable Community Development Tool (SCDTool). CMHC is Canada’s national housing agency. CMHC is committed to promoting housing solutions and sustainable community development in Canada and abroad.

The CMHC SCDTool is a comprehensive sustainable community planning information system with three primary purposes: to operate as a complete framework for sustainable urban policy development, sustainability indicator selection and target setting to operate as a guide and checklist for sustainability workshops (charrettes), and education to act as an implementation system for transferring sustainability from the policy level down through urban planning, block and building design to construction and operations. In short: to achieve sustainability in practice.

The CMHC SCDTool can help you:

  • setup your community as an application, setting intentions and targets and producing worksheets for implementation
  • prepare for design workshops and public engagement, introducing a complete sustainability framework
  • send out topics and images for discussion and feedback
